Karbon Brewing: Better Beer For a Better World

Giving new meaning to the term "Green Beer", Ontario's Karbon Brewing is creating real environmental change within the brewing industry and beyond.

Did you know it takes roughly 20 gallons of water to make a pint of beer? Plus it takes approximately two months to offset the carbon emissions caused by a regular six pack of beer—enter Karbon Brewing to change that!

From using local ingredients, to becoming Canada’s First Carbon Negative Brewery by 2024, here are 5 ways Karbon Brewing prioritizes Sustainability and the Environment in every business decision they make.

1. Carbon Negative Committed to removing CO2 from our atmosphere, Karbon is poised to be Canada’s First Carbon Negative Brewery by 2024 with their own Bricks and Mortar brewery. To achieve this inspiring goal Karbon is looking to unique solutions such as:

  • Burning spent grain to produce heat for brewing

  • Tracking every aspect of their carbon footprint using a carbon accounting software Karbon

  • Working with carbon capture company Air Capture LLC to channel atmospheric CO2 into carbonating their beers

2. Green Gear Karbon's gear and merch is made local whenever possible using sustainable cotton or upcycled polyester and is shipped in bio-degradable or recyclable mailers. You can also add a donation to Trees Canada at checkout and if you pay through the Shop@app, Shopify will also help by offsetting the carbon footprint of your shipping. Plus Karbon will take back any used, broken or wrong size items in an attempt to upcycle or donate them.

3. Support Local

Supporting the environment means supporting local and Karbon sources the highest quality local ingredients including hops from Wolfe Island Hopyard and Clear Valley Hops, allowing them to reduce their carbon footprint and build a more secure supply chain.

4. People and The Planet

Karbon's commitment goes beyond the environment—they provide fair living wages to their employees, have partnered with Beer. Diversity. to address how they can best amplify the voices of underrepresented communities and through their #GiveBackMore Program Karbon supports local grassroots community initiatives like #GreenUpDrinkUp and more.

5. Eco-Packaging All Karbon four-packs now come in biodegradable holders and all beer, gear and merch is packaged in biodegradable or recyclable mailers. The can sleeves are designed with a zipper making them easier to remove for recycling, and always looking to be greener, Karbon is now working with their supplier to switch over to biodegradable sleeves.

Karbon has joined the Ontario Craft Beer Market with their Helios Helles Lager, J.E.D.I IPA (Justice. Equity. Diversity. Inclusion.), One World Wit and Wild Cherry Selzter, and you can check out their handy map to find a stocked bottle shop near you.
