Too much or too little, too often or not enough, watering can be one of the trickiest parts of being a plant parent to master. While there is no hard rule for when or even how much to water, these tips will help keep your houseplants hydrated and happy.
WHEN
• Research: Some plants need the soil to dry out in between waterings, where some need the soil to remain moist
• Check: Stick your finger into the soil 1-2 inches deep to check the moisture level
• Observe: Some plants, like a limp Fittonia, will tell you when they need water
• Environmental Factors: A hot sunny window or shady cool corner will alter how much water the plant needs, as well as seasonal changes in the weather
FROM THE TOP • Best: Water over the sink letting the excess drain out
• Better: Water a bit at a time to not drown the plant
• Bad: Soaking the plant in a pot with no drainage
FROM THE BOTTOM
(aka the butt chug)
• Put your plant in a bowl with a few inches of water
• After a few minutes the soil will soak up all the water it needs
The more you know the more you'll grow!
